The central government has imposed a ban on pharmacies selling cough and cold medicines without a doctor’s prescription.
This action comes a few months after incidents in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan in which children died from adulterated cough medicines.
In this regard, the announcement issued by the Union Health Ministry states:
“Using the powers conferred under Sections 12 and 33 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, amendments have been made to the Drugs Rules, 1945.
According to the Drugs (Fifth Amendment) Rules, 2026, the syrup (Syrups) category has been removed from Schedule K, which lists medicines permitted to be sold without a doctor’s prescription.
It is stated that these will come into effect from the date of publication in the official gazette.”
As a result, medicines commonly given to children without a doctor’s prescription can no longer be purchased at pharmacies.
However, no clarification has been provided regarding how long a prescription can be used from the date it is issued by a doctor.

மருத்துவரின் மருந்து சீட்டு இல்லாமல் இருமல், சளி மருந்துகளை விற்பனை செய்ய மருந்தகங்களுக்கு மத்திய அரசு தடை விதித்துள்ளது.
மத்தியப் பிரதேசம் மற்றும் ராஜஸ்தானில் கலப்படம் செய்யப்பட்ட இருமல் மருந்துகளால் குழந்தைகள் உயிரிழந்த சம்பவங்கள் நிகழ்ந்த சில மாதங்களுக்குப் பிறகு இந்த நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
இதுதொடர்பாக மத்திய சுகாதாரத்துறை வெளியிட்டிருக்கும் அறிவிப்பில் தெரிவித்திருப்பதாவது:
“1940 ஆம் ஆண்டு மருந்துகள் மற்றும் அழகுசாதனப் பொருள்கள் சட்டத்தின் 12 மற்றும் 33 வது பிரிவுகளின் கீழ் வழங்கப்பட்ட அதிகாரங்களைப் பயன்படுத்தி, 1945-ஆம் ஆண்டு மருந்துகள் விதிகளில் திருத்தம் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது.
மருந்துகள் (ஐந்தாவது திருத்தம்) விதிகள், 2026-ன் படி, மருத்துவரின் மருத்துவச் சீட்டு இல்லாமல் விற்பனை செய்ய அனுமதிக்கப்பட்ட மருந்துகள் பட்டியல் இடம்பெற்ற அட்டவணை கே-வில், சிரப் (Syrups) வகை நீக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
அரசிதழில் வெளியிடப்படும் தேதியிலிருந்து இவை நடைமுறைக்கு வரும்” என்று குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளது.
இதன்மூலம், மருத்துவர்களின் மருந்து சீட்டு இல்லாமல் வழக்கமாக குழந்தைகளுக்கு அளிக்கப்படும் மருந்துகளை இனி மருந்தகங்களில் வாங்க முடியாது.
இருப்பினும், மருத்துவர், மருந்து சீட்டு வழங்கும் தேதியிலிருந்து எவ்வளவு காலம் அதனை பயன்படுத்திக் கொள்ளாலாம் என்பது தொடர்பாக விளக்கம் அளிக்கப்படவில்லை.
