The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) yesterday (June 15) released the results of the preliminary examination for the Civil Services Examination for 2026.
The number of candidates who passed is lower compared with last year, causing some surprise among examinees.
For the 2026 Civil Services Examination, 1,016 vacancies were announced. The preliminary examination for this was held on May 24. This is slightly lower than the 1,087 vacancies announced in 2025.
With the preliminary examination results now released, the number of candidates who passed has also decreased. It is said that, in line with the number of vacant posts, the number of candidates selected for the main examination has also declined.
For the 2026 Civil Services Examination, 13,343 candidates have qualified for the main examination for 1,016 vacant posts. It is noteworthy that last year, 14,161 candidates had qualified for 1,087 vacant posts.
The number of candidates selected in the Indian Forest Service (IFoS) examination list has decreased even further compared with the IAS and IPS posts.
Similarly, the number of candidates selected in the Indian Forest Service examination has fallen by nearly half.
In the IFS exam, only 1,046 candidates have qualified for the mains this year for 80 vacant posts. It is noteworthy that last year, 2,116 candidates were selected for 150 vacant posts.
Every year, lakhs of candidates take the UPSC examination. Of them, only a very small number are selected for the mains based on the cut-off.
In this situation, candidates believe that the cut-off may have been raised further this year and that the commission may have followed some additional stringent procedures in the pass rate.
Students had said that the UPSC preliminary examination, which has already been conducted, was somewhat difficult. Candidates had also said that the question paper pattern changes every year and that this year, current affairs were asked extensively across all sections. In this situation, the reduction in the number of candidates qualifying in the preliminary examination has caused some dissatisfaction among students.

Main examination
UPSC has instructed all 13,343 candidates who passed the preliminary examination to fill out and submit the detailed application form for the main examination online between June 19 and June 28.
This includes payment of fees, updating personal details, and indicating cadre preferences. It has also been stated that if the application is not completed in full, the admit card for the main examination will not be issued.
According to the UPSC schedule, the main examination is set to be held in August.
Only those who pass the interview after clearing the preliminary exam will be included in the final list. Based on the final scores, candidates will be selected for the IAS, IPS, and IFS services.
CSAT Exam
‘CSAT’ (Civil Services Aptitude Test) was introduced as the second paper in the UPSC Preliminary Examination 15 years ago. Only if a candidate qualifies in this paper will the first paper be evaluated. If one fails the CSAT paper, it means failure in the Preliminary Examination. Although there was strong opposition to this at first, it was later accepted. The questions in this paper have been getting harder every year. It is noteworthy that UPSC aspirants recently held a protest in the national capital, Delhi, against the CSAT paper and over the fact that this year’s Preliminary Examination was difficult.

இதில் கடந்த ஆண்டை ஒப்பிடுகையில் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றவர்களின் எண்ணிக்கை குறைவாகவே உள்ளது, தேர்வர்களிடையே சற்று அதிர்ச்சியை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது.
2026 ஆம் ஆண்டுக்கான குடிமைப் பணிகள் தேர்வுக்கு 1,016 காலிப் பணியிடங்கள் அறிவிக்கப்பட்டன. இதற்கான முதல்நிலைத் தேர்வு கடந்த மே 24 ஆம் தேதி நடைபெற்றது. 2025-இல் அறிவிக்கப்பட்ட 1,087 காலிப் பணியிடங்களைவிட இது சற்று குறைவுதான்.

இந்நிலையில் இந்தாண்டு கட் – ஆப் மேலும் உயர்த்தப்பட்டிருக்கலாம் எனவும் தேர்ச்சி விகிதத்தில் தேர்வாணையம் மேலும் சில கடுமையான நடைமுறைகளைப் பின்பற்றியிருக்கலாம் என்றும் தேர்வர்கள் கருதுகின்றனர்.
ஏற்கனவே நடந்து முடிந்த யுபிஎஸ்சி முதல்நிலைத் தேர்வு சற்று கடினமாக இருந்ததாக மாணவர்கள் கூறியிருந்தனர். ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் வினாத்தாள் வடிவம் மாறி வருவதாகவும் இந்தாண்டு அனைத்துப் பிரிவுகளிலும் நடப்பு நிகழ்வுகள் அதிகம் கேட்கப்பட்டிருந்ததாகவும் தேர்வர்கள் கூறியிருந்தனர். இந்நிலையில் முதல்நிலைத் தேர்வில் தேர்ச்சி எண்ணிக்கை குறைந்துள்ளது மாணவர்களிடையே சற்று அதிருப்தியை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது.

முதன்மைத் தேர்வு
முதல்நிலைத் தேர்வில் வெற்றி பெற்ற 13,343 தேர்வர்களும் ஜூன் 19 முதல் ஜூன் 28-க்குள் இணையவழியில் முதன்மைத் தேர்வுக்கான விரிவான விண்ணப்பப் படிவத்தை பூர்த்தி செய்து சமர்ப்பிக்குமாறு யுபிஎஸ்சி அறிவுறுத்தியுள்ளது.
கட்டணம் செலுத்துதல், தனிப்பட்ட விவரங்களைப் புதுப்பித்தல், பணிப்பிரிவு (cadre) விருப்பங்களைக் குறிப்பிடுதல் ஆகியவை இதில் அடங்கும். விண்ணப்பம் முழுமையாக பூர்த்தி செய்யாவிட்டால் முதன்மைத் தேர்வுக்கான நுழைவுச் சீட்டு வழங்கப்படாது என்றும் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது.
யுபிஎஸ்சி அட்டவணையின்படி வருகிற ஆகஸ்ட் மாதம் முதன்மைத் தேர்வு நடைபெற உள்ளது.
முதன்மைத் தேர்வைத் தொடர்ந்து நேர்காணலிலும் வெற்றி பெற்றவர்கள் மட்டுமே இறுதி பட்டியலில் இடம்பெறுவார்கள். இறுதி மதிப்பெண்கள் அடிப்படையில் ஐஏஎஸ், ஐபிஎஸ், ஐஎப்எஸ் பணிகளுக்குத் தேர்வாவார்கள்.
சி-சாட் தேர்வு (CSAT Exam)
யுபிஎஸ்சி முதல்நிலைத் தேர்வில் இரண்டாம் தாளாக ‘சி-சாட்’ (குடிமைப் பணிகள் திறனறித் தேர்வு) 15 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு அறிமுகமானது. இந்த தாளில் தகுதி பெற்றால் மட்டுமே முதல் தாள் திருத்தப்படும். சி – சாட் தாளில் தோல்வியுற்றால் முதல்நிலைத் தேர்வில் தோல்விதான். இதற்கு ஆரம்பத்தில் கடுமையான எதிர்ப்பு கிளம்பிய நிலையில் பின்னர் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளப்பட்டது. இந்த தாளின் வினாக்கள் ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் கடினமாக மாறி வருகிறது. இந்தாண்டு முதல்நிலைத் தேர்வு கடினமாக இருந்ததற்கும் சி – சாட் தாளுக்கு எதிராகவும் சமீபத்தில் தலைநகர் தில்லியில் யுபிஎஸ்சி தேர்வர்கள் போராட்டம் நடத்தியது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.
