11 people were killed and 53 injured in a horrific airstrike carried out by Russia early Monday morning targeting Ukraine’s major cities.
In the attack that shook Ukraine’s capital Kyiv and its second-largest city Kharkiv, 5 civilians and rescue workers were killed in Kyiv alone. A 25-story apartment building and commercial complexes there were gutted by fire.
In particular, the roof of the world-famous UNESCO World Heritage spiritual site, the 11th-century Pechersk Lavra church, caught fire and was damaged.
Ukraine announced that Russia launched 70 missiles and 611 drones overnight, and that it had shot down 50 missiles and 582 drones.
Notably, this attack took place the day after U.S. President Donald Trump held separate phone conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, ahead of the start of the G7 summit in France.
Condemning the attack, Zelensky said, “This is the biggest crime Russia has committed against Christianity.” At the same time, Russia responded that only Ukraine’s weapons production plants were attacked, and that the strike on the church was caused by a Ukrainian air-defense missile that went astray and fell there.
“The accusations made by Ukraine and its allies that Russia attacked the church are ‘an outright lie.’ European leaders who, without evidence, blame Russia in this matter have remained silent about Ukraine’s attack on a student dormitory and a museum in Russia,” Russia also alleged.
