The participation of Kajari Banerjee, the wife of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s brother, in the meeting held by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari with Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillors on Monday has caused a stir in the state’s politics.
Kajari Banerjee is the wife of Samir Banerjee, Mamata Banerjee’s brother. She is a former councillor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Already, most Trinamool Congress MPs and MLAs have raised the banner of revolt against Mamata Banerjee and have begun acting independently. In this situation, Kajari Banerjee, a close relative of hers, attending Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s event has also raised various questions about her political stance.
Recently, Firhad Hakim, who resigned from the post of Kolkata Mayor, along with former chairman of the municipal board and South Kolkata Trinamool MP Mala Roy, among others, attended the event and sat on the stage with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. In addition, several disgruntled Trinamool MPs and MLAs, as well as many Trinamool Congress councillors and former councillors, took part.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that the Kolkata Municipal Corporation election will be held in December this year.
Regarding her participation in the Chief Minister’s event, Kajari Banerjee said, “I was invited to discuss public issues and development works in the municipal corporation. I accepted that invitation and took part in it. It is commendable that the Chief Minister extended an invitation to members of the opposition,” she said.
Kajari Banerjee declined to answer a question about the notice sent by investigative agencies to Abhishek Banerjee, another close relative of Mamata Banerjee who is being projected as her political heir.
