New Delhi: India ranked second last month in crude oil imports from Russia.
Since European countries stopped buying crude oil from Russia because of the Ukraine war, India has been importing large quantities of the cheaper crude oil available from Russia. Following this, the United States pressured India, saying that tariffs would be increased.
In this situation, as the Iran war began and shipping in the Strait of Hormuz came to a standstill, the United States granted an exemption for India to once again buy crude oil from Russia.
The report released by Finland’s Energy Research Center states the following:
India imported crude oil worth $5.2 billion from Russia last April. In total, India imported hydrocarbons worth $5.8 billion from Russia. Of this, 83 percent was crude oil.
China tops the list, importing fuel worth $8.1 billion from Russia. India follows in second place. The main reason for this is that import volumes at the Vadinar and Jamnagar oil refineries increased by 36 percent and 14 percent, respectively.
Similarly, the import volumes of government-owned public sector oil refineries increased by 13 percent and 42 percent, respectively, compared with the previous month. As a result, there was no fuel shortage in India even though crude oil transport through the Strait of Hormuz was disrupted.
