Following the infection of one person with the Nipah virus in Kozhikode, Kerala, measures to prevent its further spread have been intensified.
A 43-year-old man from the Ramanattukara area of Kozhikode district has been confirmed through medical tests to be infected with the Nipah virus. Following this, he has been admitted to the government medical college hospital there for further treatment. One hundred people who were in contact with him have been placed under medical observation. Medical tests were conducted on 3 relatives who had close contact with him. Officials said that these 3 people have been found not to be infected with the Nipah virus.
Following the confirmation of Nipah virus infection, a team from the Indian Council of Medical Research has arrived in Kozhikode. There, they held discussions with Revenue Minister A.P. Anilkumar, who is the minister in charge of Kozhikode district. The team also consulted with doctors and district administration officials regarding measures to prevent the spread of the Nipah virus. Officials have also noted that the Indian Council of Medical Research team will remain in Kozhikode for a few more days. Reports indicate that a team of officials from the National Centre for Disease Control is also expected to arrive in Kozhikode soon.
Meanwhile, Minister Anilkumar, who held consultations with district officials in Kozhikode, instructed the authorities to provide all necessary medical facilities to the person infected with the Nipah virus and to take the necessary precautionary measures to prevent the virus from spreading to others.
The Nipah virus can originate from fruit-eating bats. This virus can spread from animals to humans. It can also spread between humans. Infection with this virus can cause severe respiratory problems and encephalitis.
