Vaigai Dam is the main source of drinking water support for the districts of Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, and Sivagangai.
In addition, agriculture in all these districts has been taking place using the water released from the Vaigai Dam. After about 68 years, the water level in Vaigai Dam fell below 20 feet, causing the amount of water drawn for use in Madurai and Theni districts to decrease and leading to a shortage of drinking water.
Regarding this, we had published an article in the 14/06/2026 issue of ‘Junior Vikatan’. It stated that there is silt and sand up to 20 feet in Vaigai Dam.
As a result, the bottom level of the dam has become silted up and muddy. For these reasons, the water is turbid, and there are also difficulties in storing it; we had published an article with interviews from farmers and social activists saying that the Vaigai Dam should be desilted.
On the fourth day after the release of the J.V. magazine, yesterday, Electricity Minister C.T.R. Nirmalkumar personally visited and inspected the desilting of the Vaigai Dam along with Theni District Collector Vaithinathan.
After inspecting and speaking to the press, Minister C.T.R. Nirmalkumar said, “We are currently conducting an inspection regarding the desilting work at the Vaigai dam.
For this, a letter seeking approval has been sent to the Central Government a few days ago. Once approval is received, the desilting work will begin.
Officials say that even if the desilting work is carried out in three phases, it will take 9 years to complete. We have instructed them to plan to finish the work before that. At the Vaigai dam, due to sand mounds, 20% of the water cannot be stored at present. We are going to undertake work to rectify that.
It is surprising that desilting work has not been carried out at the Vaigai dam for 70 years. Officials are monitoring the removal of silt by individuals who are not farmers. If information about that is received, strict action will be taken,'' he said.
Regarding the question of the Forest Department evicting the hill tribes who have been living in the Megamalai forest areas for several hundred years, he said, “Hill tribes can live where they are without disturbing natural resources. Likewise, studies will be conducted and appropriate action will be taken to protect natural resources.”

இதற்காக மத்திய அரசிடம் ஒப்புதலைக் கேட்டு சில நாள்களுக்கு முன்பு கடிதம் அனுப்பப்பட்டுள்ளது ஒப்புதல் கிடைத்தவுடன் தூர்வாரும் பணிகள் துவங்கப்படும்.
மூன்று கட்டங்களாகத் தூர்வாரும் பணிகள் மேற்கொண்டால் கூட முடிவு பெற 9 வருடம் ஆகும் என அதிகாரிகள் தெரிவிக்கின்றனர். அதற்கு முன்பாகப் பணிகளை முடிப்பதற்குத் திட்டமிடக் கூறியிருக்கிறோம். வைகை அணையில் மணல் மேடுகளால் 20% நீர் தேக்க முடியாத சூழல் தற்போது உள்ளது. அதை நிவர்த்தி செய்யும் பணிகளில் மேற்கொள்ள உள்ளோம்.
70 ஆண்டுகளாக வைகை அணையில் தூர்வாரும் பணிகளை மேற்கொள்ளப்படவில்லை என்பது ஆச்சரியமாக உள்ளது. விவசாயிகள் அல்லாத தனிநபர்கள் வண்டல் மண் எடுப்பது குறித்து அதிகாரிகள் கண்காணிப்பில் ஈடுபடுகின்றனர். அது குறித்து தகவல் கிடைத்தால் கடுமையாக நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்படும்” என்றார்.
மேகமலை வனப்பகுதிகளில் பல நூறு ஆண்டுகளாக வசித்து வரும் மலைவாழ் மக்களை வனத்துறை வெளியேற்றுவது குறித்த கேள்விக்கு, ‘’இயற்கை வளங்களைத் தொந்தரவு செய்யாமல் மலைவாழ் மக்களள் அவர்கள் இருக்கும் இடத்தில் வசிக்கலாம். அதே போல் இயற்கை வளங்களைப் பாதுகாப்பதிலும் ஆய்வு செய்து உரிய நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்படும் ” எனத் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.
