Suvendu Adhikari, who has taken charge as the new Chief Minister of West Bengal, has ordered that singing the song 'Vande Mataram' be made mandatory in all schools and madrasas in the state, as one of the first major decisions of his government. The government order states that all the lines of the national song Vande Mataram must be sung in full during the morning prayer assembly.
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has expressed deep concern over this decision of the West Bengal government. The board has urged the state government to immediately withdraw this unilateral announcement, or at the very least exempt Muslim students from it.
In a press release issued by the board’s spokesperson, Dr. S.Q.R. Ilyas, regarding this, it was stated, “Forcing a student to sing a song or recite a speech that goes against their religious beliefs is an act that directly violates the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Indian Constitution.”
Speaking about this, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said, ``If you want to live in this country, you must sing Vande Mataram and Jana Gana Mana. You must respect January 26 and August 15. Singing Vande Mataram has been made mandatory in every school. This is Indian culture, Sanatan culture. India is also known as Hindustan. This country should not fall into anyone else’s hands.''
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has expressed his support for this move by the West Bengal government. Speaking on this, he said, ``Vande Mataram is the national song for the entire nation. It does not belong only to me or only to you.
"This is not exclusive to any particular state or any specific religion. This is a national song. There should be no room for politicizing this issue," he said.
Speaking about this issue, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said, ``Singing the full song of Vande Mataram at the beginning and end of government events is unnecessary and burdensome. We all respect Vande Mataram. But it cannot be justified to make its full version mandatory at every event. Usually, only the first few lines of the national song are sung at the beginning of an event. The national anthem is played separately at the end. Now, asking people to sing the full song at both the beginning and the end is an unnecessary imposition," he said.
