Following the BJP’s massive victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, the Trinamool Congress, which was the ruling party there, is now facing the most severe life-or-death struggle in its history. After the crushing electoral defeat, the Trinamool Congress has become embroiled in intense internal factional conflict. Of the 80 MLAs in the party, around 50 to 60 are said to be in rebellion against the leadership. As a result, the party is at risk of splitting.
Recently, the internal conflict within the party came to light when two Trinamool MLAs complained to the Speaker that their signatures had been forged on the letter for selecting the Leader of the Opposition. In this situation, when permission was sought from the Kolkata Police to hold a protest at a prominent location condemning the attacks on Trinamool Congress workers after the election results, permission was denied.

Speaking at the event, Mamata Banerjee said, "Even if other leaders run away in fear, I will never abandon my workers, even if it costs me my life. This is a do-or-die struggle for us. Some people are betraying us in an attempt to break the Trinamool Congress. Parties opposed to the BJP will soon gather in Delhi and decide on the next phase of nationwide action. We were not even given police permission to set up a stage or use a microphone. Under the BJP government, our democratic rights are being denied." She said angrily.
Although it has suffered a severe political setback, the Trinamool Congress is trying to face this crisis boldly. Today’s protest was attended by senior leaders including Mamata’s staunch supporters Firhad Hakim, Madan Mitra, Derek O’Brien, Kalyan Banerjee, and Dola Sen. However, the fact that many first-time MLAs who contested and won on behalf of Trinamool in the recent election stayed away from the protest is being seen as a major setback for Mamata.
