Following the defeat of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress in the recently concluded Assembly election in West Bengal (May 4), the party has been facing one major setback and crisis after another. Attacks on senior party leaders, internal factional feuds, successive boycotts of legislative meetings by MLAs, a forged signature scam, and a CID investigation have created a situation in which the Trinamool Congress now appears to be moving toward decline.
The West Bengal Assembly election results ushered in a new era in state politics. Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress party, which had long been in power, lost the reins of government after being defeated by the BJP led by Suvendu Adhikari. This defeat brought the voices of discontent within the party out into the open.
Senior leaders strongly raised the banner of revolt, especially against Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee. Senior leader Suvendu Sekhar Roy, resigned MP Kakoli Ghosh, and former minister Partha Chatterjee blamed the defeat on the government’s handling of the RG Kar Hospital incident, the ration and teacher recruitment scams, and the dominance of election strategist Prashant Kishor’s “I-PAC” company. In particular, they lamented that the I-PAC company had ruined the party, fueled corruption, and isolated Mamata.
In response to this, Mamata Banerjee has formed a five-member special committee to take action against those who criticize her, and as a first step, has expelled party spokesperson Riju Dutta from the party for six years.
After the election results, Abhishek Banerjee had sent the Speaker, on May 9, a resolution letter signed by the party’s MLAs, requesting that senior leader Sovandeb Chattopadhyay be appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly. However, Trinamool Congress MLAs Ritabrata Banerjee and Chandiban Saha filed a complaint with the Legislative Assembly Secretariat, alleging that their signatures had been forged on it.
The state crime investigation department is investigating this matter. In this connection, inquiries were conducted with 13 MLAs: Bakarul Islam, Chandranath Sinha, Arup Roy, Tapas Maity, Nayana Banerjee, Tapas Mondal, Subashish Das, Toraf Hossain Mondal, Dinen Roy, Kunal Ghosh, Dr. Abdul Aziz, Abdul Matin, and Tausifur Rahman. Among them, three MLAs—Arup Roy, Bakarul Islam, and Subashish Das—have admitted that the signatures on that resolution were not theirs.
Following this, the C.I.D. issued a notice to Abhishek Banerjee and ordered him to appear in person on Monday with the party’s resolution book. However, citing ill health, Abhishek Banerjee has sought additional time through his lawyer.
On the one hand, there is trouble within the party; on the other hand, Mamata Banerjee has been shocked by attacks on the party’s senior members. On Saturday, unidentified persons attacked Trinamool Congress national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee, who had gone to meet the family members of a party worker who was murdered last Saturday. Injured in the attack, Abhishek Banerjee had said, “They are trying to kill me.” As his interview went viral on social media, he was admitted to the hospital.
Similarly, senior MP Kalyan Banerjee was also attacked in Hooghly district and suffered a head injury. Mamata Banerjee had accused the BJP of being behind these attacks.
Meanwhile, last Sunday (May 31), a meeting of Trinamool Congress legislators was urgently convened at Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat, Kolkata. Of the 80 MLAs elected on the party’s ticket in the 2026 state election, only 20, that is, just one-fourth, attended the meeting. The meeting was canceled due to the lack of a sufficient number of members.
The MLAs’ disregard for the party leadership’s directive left the party’s supreme leader Mamata Banerjee deeply displeased. As a result, she did not even go to the room where the meeting was to be held, and instead had the cancellation of the meeting announced through senior leader Sovandeb Chattopadhyay. However, one side of the MLA meeting says that Mamata Banerjee engaged in informal consultations with some of the MLAs who had arrived.
"The MLAs were unable to attend the meeting because they were involved in protests against the attack on Trinamool Congress MPs, and because the police had detained many MLAs.

However, the question raised by an MLA who did not wish to be named—why local MLAs such as Javed Ahmed Khan from Kolkata and Sandipan Saha did not attend the Kalighat meeting when distant MLAs like Abdur Rahim Boxi from Malda district and Rukbanur Rahman from Nadia district were able to come—suggests that Mamata Banerjee’s empire is in trouble.
Mamata Banerjee seems to have anticipated that situations like this would arise. That is why, when 10 MLAs did not attend the post-election strategy meeting, Mamata Banerjee openly said, ``Those who want to leave the party are free to go; I will rebuild the party from scratch. Amid this intense political turmoil, today (June 1) the Trinamool Congress party issued a swift order removing its MLAs, Sandipan Saha and Ritabrata Banerjee, from the position of primary membership in the party. In the letter related to this, signed and sent by the party’s All India vice president Chandrani Bhattacharya, it said, ``Although you contested and won as All India Trinamool Congress candidates, you have consistently failed to participate in the meetings convened by the party’s recognized leadership.
It was also found that she had been making statements detrimental to the interests of the party and carrying out actions against the party. Therefore, you are being immediately removed from the position of primary member of the party." it stated. Through this, Mamata Banerjee has begun her furious offensive.
Just a few minutes before this removal order was issued, West Bengal’s new Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari met reporters at the state secretariat. இதற்கிடையில்தான், கடந்த ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை (மே 31), கொல்கத்தாவின் காளிகாட்டில் உள்ள மம்தா பானர்ஜியின் இல்லத்தில் திரிணமுல் காங்கிரஸ் கட்சியின் சட்டமன்ற உறுப்பினர்கள் கூட்டம் அவசரமாகக் கூட்டப்பட்டது. 2026 மாநிலத் தேர்தலில் அக்கட்சியின் சார்பில் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்ட 80 எம்.எல்.ஏ-க்களில் வெறும் 20 பேர், அதாவது நான்கில் ஒரு பகுதியினர் மட்டுமே இக்கூட்டத்தில் கலந்து கொண்டனர். போதிய எண்ணிக்கையில் உறுப்பினர்கள் இல்லாத காரணத்தால் அந்தக் கூட்டம் ரத்து செய்யப்பட்டது.
எம்.எல்.ஏ-க்கள் கட்சித் தலைமையின் உத்தரவைப் புறக்கணித்தது, கட்சியின் சுப்ரீம் பவர் மம்தா பானர்ஜியை பெரும் அதிருப்திக்கு உள்ளாக்கியது. இதனால் அவர் கூட்டம் நடைபெறவிருந்த அறைக்குக்கூட செல்லாமல், மூத்த தலைவர் சோவன்தேப் சட்டோபாத்யாய் மூலமாக கூட்டம் ரத்து செய்யப்பட்ட தகவலை மட்டும் அறிவித்தார். ஆனால், எம்.எல்.ஏ கூட்டத்தின் ஒரு தரப்பு, மம்தா பானர்ஜி வந்திருந்த சில எம்.எல்.ஏ-க்களுடன் முறைசாரா ஆலோசனையில் ஈடுபட்டதாகக் கூறுகிறது.

கூட்டத்தை சில நாள்களுக்கு ஒத்திவைக்குமாறு அவர்கள் விடுத்த கோரிக்கையைத் தலைமை ஏற்றுக் கொண்டது. இதுதான் மம்தா பானர்ஜியின் கூட்டம் ரத்து செய்யப்பட்டதற்கு காரணம் என எம்.எல்.ஏ-வும், கட்சியின் செய்தித் தொடர்பாளருமான குணால் கோஷ் தெரிவித்திருந்தார்.
இருப்பினும், மால்டா மாவட்டத்தைச் சேர்ந்த அப்துர் ரஹீம் பாக்ஸி, நதியா மாவட்டத்தைச் சேர்ந்த ருக் பானுர் ரஹ்மான் போன்ற தூரத்து எம்.எல்.ஏ-க்கள் காளிகாட் கூட்டத்திற்கு வர முடிந்தபோது, கொல்கத்தாவைச் சேர்ந்த ஜாவேத் அகமது கான் மற்றும் சந்திபன் சாகா போன்ற உள்ளூர் எம்.எல்.ஏ-க்கள் ஏன் வரவில்லை என்று பெயர் குறிப்பிட விரும்பாத எம்.எல்.ஏ ஒருவரின் கேள்வி மம்தா பானர்ஜியின் சாம்ராஜ்யம் சிக்கலில் இருப்பதை உணர்த்துகிறது.
இது போன்ற சூழல்கள் ஏற்படும் என்பதை மம்தா பானர்ஜி எதிர்பார்த்திருந்ததாகவே தெரிகிறது. அதன் காரணமாகத்தான், தேர்தல் முடிவுகளுக்குப் பிந்தைய உத்தி வகுப்புக் கூட்டத்திற்கு 10 எம்.எல்.ஏ-க்கள் வராத போது, மம்தா பானர்ஜி வெளிப்படையாகவே, “கட்சியை விட்டு வெளியேற விரும்புபவர்கள் தாராளமாகச் செல்லலாம், நான் கட்சியைப் புதிதாகக் கட்டியெழுப்புவேன். எனக்கு இன்னும் அந்த ஆற்றல் இருக்கிறது.” எனப் பேசியிருந்தார்.
இந்தத் தீவிர அரசியல் பரபரப்புக்கு மத்தியில், இன்று (ஜூன் 1) திரிணமுல் காங்கிரஸ் கட்சி தனது எம்.எல்.ஏ-க்களான சந்திபன் சாகா மற்றும் ரிதாப்ரதா பானர்ஜி ஆகிய இருவரையும் கட்சியின் முதன்மை உறுப்பினர் பொறுப்பில் இருந்து நீக்கி அதிரடி உத்தரவு பிறப்பித்தது. இது தொடர்பாக கட்சியின் அகில இந்திய துணைத் தலைவர் சந்திராணி பட்டாச்சார்யா கையெழுத்திட்டு அனுப்பிய அந்த கடிதத்தில், “அகில இந்திய திரிணமுல் காங்கிரஸ் வேட்பாளர்களாகப் போட்டியிட்டு வெற்றி பெற்ற போதிலும், கட்சியின் அங்கீகரிக்கப்பட்ட தலைமை கூட்டும் கூட்டங்களில் நீங்கள் தொடர்ந்து பங்கேற்கத் தவறிவிட்டீர்கள்.
மேலும், கட்சியின் நலன்களுக்குக் குந்தகம் விளைவிக்கும் வகையிலான அறிக்கைகளையும், கட்சிக்கு எதிரான நடவடிக்கைகளையும் மேற்கொண்டு வருவது கண்டறியப்பட்டுள்ளது. எனவே, நீங்கள் கட்சியின் முதன்மை உறுப்பினர் பதவியிலிருந்து உடனடியாக நீக்கப்படுகிறீர்கள்.” எனக் குறிப்பிடப்பட்டிருந்தது. இதன் மூலம், தன் ஆவேச ஆட்டத்தை தொடங்கியிருக்கிறார் மம்தா பானர்ஜி.
