The Tamil Nadu government has ordered the closure of liquor shops near educational institutions and places of worship. Accordingly, more than 20 shops in Thanjavur district are set to be closed. Among them, the most notable is the TASMAC shop near the new bus stand in Thanjavur. This shop has long been a major nuisance for the local residents, especially women. Since it is a bus stand, there is heavy foot traffic 24 hours a day. However, due to the behavior of alcohol enthusiasts, women were afraid to walk in that area. The public and various social organizations have continuously raised their voices demanding the closure of this shop. However, no one came forward to take action.
After more than six months of continuous demands, the new government ordered the permanent closure of this shop. Regarding this, local traders and employees said, "Every day, we used to come and go along this path with great fear. It was impossible to walk through the crowd of drunkards at night. There were obscene words and disgusting jokes. Now that this shop has been closed, we are very happy. If, along with this, drugs like ganja are eradicated throughout Tamil Nadu, the people will be forever grateful to this government!" they stated.

இது குறித்து அப்பகுதி வியாபாரிகளும் ஊழியர்களும் கூறுகையில், “ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் இந்த வழியில் மிகுந்த அச்சத்துடனேயே சென்று வந்து கொண்டிருந்தோம். இரவு நேரங்களில் குடிகாரர்களின் கூட்டத்தினூடே நடக்கவே முடியாது.
ஆபாசமான வார்த்தைகள், கேலிகள் என்று அருவருப்பாக இருக்கும். இப்போது இக்கடைக்கு பூட்டு விழுந்தது, மிகவும் மகிழ்ச்சியாக உள்ளது. இதோடு நிறுத்திவிடாமல், தமிழகம் முழுவதும் கஞ்சா உள்ளிட்ட போதைப்பொருள்களையும் ஒழித்தால், இந்த அரசுக்கு மக்கள் என்றென்றும் நன்றிக்கடன்பட்டிருப்பார்கள்!” என்று தெரிவித்தனர்.
