He said that those who wished to contest in the DMK election should vote in one box, and those who did not want to contest should vote in the other box. Votes were counted right there on the conference floor. The majority of the supporters voted in favor of contesting in the DMK election. On the conference stage itself, Anna announced that they would contest in the DMK election. In the 1957 election, DMK won in 15 constituencies. Anna won from Kanchipuram and Karunanidhi from Kulithalai, both entering the legislative assembly for the first time. In the 1962 election, DMK won 50 seats. The opposition remained in a state of shock.
In the 1967 election, the party won by a majority and took power. Annadurai became the Chief Minister of Madras Province. Madras Province became Tamil Nadu. இன்றைய தேதிக்கு தேர்தல் அரசியலில் திமுக ஒரு மாபெரும் சக்தி. ஆனால், 1956 இல் அப்படியொரு சம்பவம் மட்டும் நடந்திடாமல் போயிருந்தால் திமுக தேர்தலிலேயே போட்டியிட்டிருக்க மாட்டார்கள். திமுவை தேர்தல் பாதைக்கு அழைத்து வந்த அந்த சம்பவம் என்ன தெரியுமா?
1949 செப்டம்பர் 17 அன்று சென்னை ராபின்சன் பூங்காவில் பெரியாரின் பிறந்தநாளில் திமுக என்கிற கட்சியைத் தொடங்கினார் அண்ணா.
1952 இல் சுதந்திரத்துக்கு பிறகு மதராஸ் மாகாணத்துக்கான முதல் சட்டமன்றத் தேர்தல் நடந்திருந்தது. திமுக தோற்றத்துக்குப் பிறகு நடந்த முதல் தேர்தலிலேயே அந்த கட்சி போட்டியிடவில்லை. தமிழ்நாடு உழைப்பாளர் கட்சிக்கும் காமன்வீல் கட்சிக்கும் திமுக தங்களின் ஆதரவை தெரிவித்தது.
1957 இல் இரண்டாவது சட்டமன்றத் தேர்தலை எதிர்கொள்ள மதராஸ் மாகாணம் தயாராகி வந்தது. அந்தத் தேர்தலில் போட்டியிடலாமா வேண்டாமா என்கிற குழப்பம் திமுகவுக்குள் நிலவியது.
1956 இல் திருச்சியில் திமுகவின் இரண்டாவது மாநில மாநாடு நடந்திருந்தது. அந்த மாநாடு மைதானத்தின் நுழைவு வாயிலில் அண்ணா இரண்டு பெட்டிகளை வைத்தார். திமுக தேர்தலில் போட்டியிடலாம் என நினைப்பவர்கள் ஒரு பெட்டியிலும் போட்டியிட வேண்டாம் என்பவர்கள் ஒரு பெட்டியிலும் வாக்களிக்க வேண்டும் என்றார்.
மாநாட்டு திடலிலேயே வாக்குகள் எண்ணப்பட்டன. திமுக தேர்தலில் போட்டியிட வேண்டுமென பெருவாரியாக தொண்டர்கள் வாக்களித்தனர். மாநாட்டின் மேடையிலேயே திமுக தேர்தலில் போட்டியிடுமென அண்ணா அறிவித்தார்.
1957 இல் நடந்த தேர்தலில் 15 தொகுதிகளில் திமுக வென்றது. காஞ்சிபுரத்தில் இருந்து அண்ணாவும் குளித்தலையில் இருந்து கருணாநிதியும் வென்று முதல் முறையாக சட்டமன்றத்துக்கு சென்றார்கள்.
1962 தேர்தலில் 50 இடங்களை திமுக வென்றது. எதிர்க்கட்சி அந்தஸ்த்திலும் அமர்கிறது. 1967 தேர்தலில் பெரும்பான்மையாக வென்று ஆட்சியையும் பிடிக்கிறது. அண்ணாதுரை மதராஸ் மாகாணத்தின் முதல்வர் ஆனார். மதராஸ் மாகாணம் தமிழ்நாடு ஆனது.
அப்போது இருந்து இப்போது வரைக்கும் தமிழக அரசியல் திமுகவை மையப்படுத்தி இருப்பதற்கும் தேர்தல் அரசியலில் திமுக மாபெரும் சக்தியாக இருப்பதற்கும் 1956 இல் நடந்த திருச்சி மாநாடுதான் மிக முக்கிய காரணம்.!
