Thirparappu Falls is one of the tourist spots located in the naturally beautiful Kanyakumari district. Since water flows here throughout the year, tourists from various regions including Tamil Nadu and Kerala visit this place. The water flowing out from the Pechiparai Dam runs through the Kodaiyar River and cascades as a waterfall in the Thirparappu area. Near Thirparappu, a water tank has been set up in the inner part of the Kodaiyar River, which flows between the Thottavaram area and Senguzhikkarai, to supply drinking water to the public.
A few days ago, the local people saw a crocodile resting on top of the drinking water tank located in the river. This information was reported to the forest department. However, it was difficult to confirm the crocodile's movement. Meanwhile, early in the morning, a worker who went to tap rubber latex saw the crocodile lying on the water tank in the river and took a photo of it on his cellphone. Following this, the crocodile's movement was confirmed. Since then, many people have seen the crocodile in person several times yesterday and the day before.
This caused fear to spread among the local people. Even after the presence of crocodiles was confirmed in the river, which is heavily used for bathing and other needs by the people in the area where crocodile activity was detected, there was a delay in the forest department taking action to capture the crocodile, leading to dissatisfaction among the people. Following this, Tharagai Kathbart, the MLA of Vilavancode constituency, conducted an inspection in the Thirparappu area. The MLA inquired about the plans to remove the crocodiles. MLA Tharagai Kathpard stated, "People should avoid going down to the river area where crocodiles are active for a few days. The forest department has initiated the first phase of work to catch and remove the crocodiles. Currently, the forest department has decided to take thermal images to confirm how many crocodiles are in the river. For this, drone cameras will be used to capture images. To facilitate counting, the sandbanks along the river will be cleared. Once the number of crocodiles in the river is confirmed, steps will be taken to catch and remove them. These tasks will be completed in a few days."
