A gathering for Karunanidhi's eloquent stage speeches and another for the identity of the poor people's champion MGR were held at DMK conferences. In a context where only a section of society accepted Karunanidhi's atheistic policies and mixed speeches, MGR was embraced as the identity of all the grassroots people, regardless of caste or religious differences.
The heroic image he built, which transcended the boundaries of Dravidian ideologies, helped him be celebrated. After Anna's demise, DMK won a landslide victory in the 1971 elections and formed the government under Karunanidhi's leadership. During that election, MGR was not only actively involved in intense campaigning but also spent lavishly on election expenses, yet he was not given a place in the cabinet! From there, MGR's rebellious voice ended with "accountability"! In 1972, MGR was expelled from DMK, and within a week, he founded AIADMK and became the "Revolutionary Leader"! Karunanidhi says, "Whatever was planned has happened." It is worth recalling here what Kannadasan mentioned in his book "The Politics I Saw"... "MGR never had the desire to start a political party or to be its leader. He only thought that his dominance in the film industry should not be lost, and his grip in politics should not slip; other than that, he did not want to be a full-time politician. கருணாநிதியின் அரசியல் சாணக்யத்தனமும், எதற்காகவும் தன் தலைமையை விட்டுக்கொடுக்காத குணமும் நாடறிந்த ஒன்று. எதிர்காலத்தில் தன் தலைமைக்குப் போட்டியாக வருவான் எனத் தெரிய வரும் கட்சியின் கடைநிலை தொண்டனுக்கும் முட்டுக்கட்டை போடக்கூடியவர் அவர் ! என்றாவது ஒரு நாள் எம்ஜிஆர் தனக்கு எதிராக திரும்பலாம் என்ற உள்ளுணர்வு அவருக்கு நிச்சயம் இருந்தது என்பதற்கான சாட்சியாக அவரது மகன் மு.க.முத்துவை குறிப்பிடலாம்.
எம்ஜிஆரின் திரைப்பட கவர்ச்சியைச் சமன் செய்யும் விதமாகவே மு.க.முத்துவை எம்ஜிஆர் பாணி நடிகராக்கும் முயற்சிகள் அரங்கேறின. இதன் வெளிப்பாடாகத்தான் எம்ஜிஆர் திமுகவிலிருந்து நீக்கப்பட்டவுடன், எம்.ஜி.ஆர் மன்றங்களை மு.க.முத்து மன்றங்களாக மாற்றும்படி தி.மு.க கிளைச் செயலாளர்களுக்கு வாய்மொழி உத்தரவு வந்ததாக சொல்லப்படுவதை அணுக வேண்டும் !
மு.க.ஸ்டாலின் தலைமை பொறுப்பை நோக்கிய தீவிர அரசியலில் ஈடுபடுவதற்கு முன்னர் தொலைக்காட்சி தொடர் ஒன்றிரண்டு திரைப்படங்கள் என திரைத்துறையிலும் தலைக்காட்டியதையும், அடுத்த அரசியல் வாரிசாக முன்னிறுத்தப்படும் உதயநிதி நடிப்பு மட்டுமன்றி தயாரிப்பு விநியோகம் என திரைத்துறையில் கால் ஊன்றிய பிறகே முழுநேர அரசியலில் ஈடுபடத் தொடங்கியதையும் இங்கு குறிப்பிட வேண்டும் !
மறுபுறம் எம்ஜிஆர் என்னும் ஆளுமை திரைத்துறையில் கொண்டிருந்த இரும்புக்கரமும் கருணாநிதியின் குணத்துக்கு குறைந்ததல்ல. அவரது கோபத்தின் விளைவுகளும் அதிகம் பேசப்பட்டவைதான்.
1953ம் ஆண்டு அண்ணாவின் அழைப்பை ஏற்று திமுகவில் இணைந்த எம்ஜிஆர், கட்சியில் தன் செல்வாக்கு கூடுவதற்கு ஈடாகத் தான் நடித்த படங்களின் பாத்திர தேர்வுகளின் மூலமும் பொது வாழ்க்கை தோற்றத்தின் மூலமும் பாமர மக்கள் வேண்டி வரவேற்கும் ஒரு அவதார புருச பிம்பத்தைக் கட்டமைத்து அதனை படிப்படியாக மெருகேற்றிக் கொண்டும் வருகிறார்.
தாயைத் தெய்வமாகப் போற்றுபவன், அபலை பெண்களின் காவலன், கடைநிலை மக்களின் உரிமைகளை மீட்டுத்தரும் கலகக்காரன், சிறுபான்மையினரை மதிப்பவன் போன்ற குணங்கள் கொண்ட ரிக்சாக்காரர், மீனவர் போன்ற சமூகத்தின் அடிமட்ட மனிதர்களின் பாத்திரங்களைத் தொடர்ந்து ஏற்று நடித்ததை யதார்த்தமாக அமைந்தது என ஒதுக்கிவிட முடியாது !
திராவிட கொள்கைகளுடன் சமதர்ம கொள்கைகளையும் பாடி, எம்ஜிஆர் ஏற்று நடித்த மேல்தட்டு பாத்திர படைப்புகள் கூட ஏழையைச் சுரண்டுபவனைச் சாட்டையைக் கொண்டு அடிக்கும் குணம் கொண்டதாகத்தான் படைக்கப்பட்டது !
மேலும் அவர் திமுகவில் இருந்தவரையிலும் அண்ணா மற்றும் திமுகவின் உதயசூரியன் பற்றிய குறியீடுகளும், உதயசூரியன் அல்லது சூரியன் போன்ற வார்த்தைகள் அவரது படப்பாடல்களிலும் தொடர்ந்து இடம்பெற்றன.
வெள்ளித்திரைக்கு வெளியிலும் தான் ஏற்று நடித்த பாத்திரங்களின் பிரதிபலிப்பாகவே தன்னை நிலைநிறுத்திக்கொண்டார் எம்ஜிஆர். அன்றைய திரைத்துறையில் என்.எஸ்.கிருஷ்ணன் போன்ற நடிகர்கள் எம்ஜிஆருக்கு முன்னரே கொடைவள்ளல்களாகத் திகழ்ந்திருந்தாலும் எம்ஜிஆரின் வள்ளல் குணமே இன்று வரையிலும் அதிகம் பேசப்படுகிறது. கொடுத்துச் சிவந்த கரம், ஏழைகளின் காவலன் போன்ற வரிகளைக் கொண்ட அவரது படப்பாடல்கள் அந்த குணத்தைச் சாமானிய மக்களிடத்தில் கொண்டு சேர்த்தன.
எம்ஜிஆரை வள்ளலாக முன்னிறுத்தியதில் திமுகவுக்கும் பெரும் பங்கு உண்டு !
“எம்ஜிஆர் ஏழைகளின் நலனுக்கு நிதியளித்த ஒவ்வொரு தருணமும் ஒரு அரசியல் நிகழ்வாக மாற்றப்பட்டு, அதில் திமுகவின் முன்னணித்தலைவர்கள் பேசுவது வழக்கமானது…” எனப் பிம்பச் சிறை நூலில் குறிப்பிடும் பேராசிரியர் எம்.எஸ்.எஸ் பாண்டியன்,
“கொடுப்பவன் தன்னைத் தேடி வருபவர்களின் கண்ணீரைத் துடைப்பவன். எம்ஜிஆர் வேறுபட்டவர். அவர் துன்பப்படும் மக்களைத் தேடிச்சென்று அவர்களின் கண்ணீரைத் துடைப்பவர். வள்ளல்களுக்கெல்லாம் வள்ளல் அவர் !”
என அண்ணாவே திமுக மேடைகளில் எம்ஜிஆரின் கொடைத்திறனைப் போற்றியதையும், திமுகவின் பிரச்சார பத்திரிக்கைகள் போற்றியதையும் விளக்குகிறார் !
மேலும், 1962 பொதுத்தேர்தலின் போது,
“பாரத கர்ணனின் கரங்கள்
கொடுத்தே சிவந்தன
ஆனால் திராவிட கர்ணனின்
திருமேனி
தினம் கொடுத்தே சிவந்தது”
என எம்ஜிஆரின் கொடைத்திறன் போற்றிய பிரச்சார பாடலையும் குறிப்பிடுகிறார்.
கருணாநிதியின் சொல்லாற்றல் மிக்க மேடைப் பேச்சுக்காக ஒரு கூட்டமும், ஏழைப்பங்காளன் எம்ஜிஆர் எனும் அடையாளத்துக்கு ஒரு கூட்டமும் திமுகவின் மாநாடுகளில் கூடியது. கருணாநிதியின் கடவுள் மறுப்பு கொள்கைகள் கலந்த பேச்சுகளை சமூகத்தின் ஒரு பகுதி மட்டுமே ஏற்றுக்கொண்ட சூழலில், ஜாதி மத பேதமின்றி கடைநிலை மக்கள் அனைவரின் அடையாளமுமாக ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளப்பட்டார் எம்ஜிஆர். திராவிட கொள்கைகள் என்ற எல்லையையும் தாண்டி கொண்டாடப்பட அவர் கட்டமைத்த கதாநாயக பிம்பம் உதவியது.
அண்ணாவின் மறைவுக்குப் பின் 1971 தேர்தலில் அமோக வெற்றி பெற்று கருணாநிதி தலைமையில் ஆட்சி அமைக்கிறது திமுக. அந்த தேர்தலின் போது தீவிரமாக பிரச்சாரத்தில் ஈடுபட்டதோடு மட்டுமல்லாமல் தேர்தல் பணிகளுக்குத் தாராளமாகச் செலவு செய்பவருமாகத் திகழ்ந்த எம்ஜிஆருக்கு அமைச்சரவையில் இடமளிக்கப்படவில்லை !
அங்குத் தொடங்கி, எம்ஜிஆரின் கலகக்குரல் “கணக்கு கேட்பதில்” முடிகிறது !
1972ல் திமுகவிலிருந்து நீக்கப்பட்ட எம்ஜிஆர், ஒரே வாரத்தில் அதிமுகவைத் தொடங்கி “புரட்சித்தலைவர்” ஆகிறார் !
எம்ஜிஆர் அதிமுக எனும் தனிக்கட்சியை தொடங்கியதற்கு,
“அவர் என்ன விரும்பினாரோ, எதற்காகத் திட்டமிட்டாரோ அது நடந்திருக்கிறது” என்கிறார் கருணாநிதி !
கண்ணதாசன், “நான் பார்த்த அரசியல்” நூலில் குறிப்பிட்டதை மீண்டும் இங்கு நினைவு கூற வேண்டும்…
“அரசியலில் ஒரு கட்சி தொடங்க வேண்டும், அதற்குத் தான் தலைவராக வேண்டும் என்கிற எண்ணமெல்லாம் எம்ஜிஆருக்கு இருந்ததில்லை. திரைத்துறையில் தன் ஆதிக்கம் போய்விடக் கூடாது, அரசியலில் தன் பிடி நழுவிவிடக் கூடாது என்றுதான் அவர் நினைத்தாரே தவிர, முழு நேர அரசியல்வாதியாகச் செயல்பட அவர் விரும்பவில்லை. ஆனால் அவரை வலுக்கட்டாயமாக ஒரு தலைவராக்கியது கருணாநிதிதான்.”
தீர்மானிக்கும் இடத்திலிருந்தால் மட்டுமே அரசியலில் பிடி நழுவாமல் நிலைக்க முடியும். தீர்மானிக்கும் இடத்தில் இருப்பவருக்குத்தான் தலைவர் என்ற பெயர் பொருந்தும் !
