இனி என்ன நடக்கும்?
இந்திய அரசியலமைப்பின் பிரிவு 3 படி, ஒரு மாநிலத்தின் பெயரை மாற்றுவதற்கான செயல்முறை மிகத் தெளிவாக வரையறுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
கேரளாவை கேரளம் என மாற்றுவதற்கான மசோதாவை மத்திய அரசு குறிப்பாக உள்துறை அமைச்சகம் தயார் செய்து, குடியரசுத் தலைவரிடம் அனுப்பும். குடியரசுத் தலைவர் அந்த மசோதாவை கேரள சட்டமன்றத்திற்கு அனுப்புவார். இது அரசியலமைப்பின் பிரிவு 3-ன் proviso-ன் கீழ் கட்டாயமானது. சட்டமன்றம் தனது கருத்துக்களை ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட காலக்கெடுவுக்குள் தெரிவிக்கும். அதன் பிறகு, மத்திய அரசு குடியரசுத் தலைவரின் பரிந்துரையைப் பெற்று, அந்த மசோதாவை நாடாளுமன்றத்தில் அறிமுகப்படுத்தும். நாடாளுமன்றம் அதை நிறைவேற்றினால், முதல் அட்டவணையில் கேரளம் என்றப் பெயர் மாற்றம் பதிவாகும்.

இருப்பினும், அரசியலமைப்பின் முதல் அட்டவணை மாநிலத்தின் பெயரை கேரளா என்று குறிப்பிடுகிறது. அரசியலமைப்பின் பிரிவு 3 இன் கீழ், அதை கேரளம் என்று திருத்த அவசர நடவடிக்கைகள் தேவை” என்றார்.
கேரளம் என்ற பெயர் காலனித்துவ ஆட்சிக்கு முந்தையது. இந்தப் பெயருக்கான குறிப்புகள் கிமு 3-ம் நூற்றாண்டில் அசோகன் ஆணைகளில் “கேரளபுத்திரர்” என்றும், பண்டைய தமிழ் இலக்கியங்களில் “அகநாநுரு” என்றும் காணப்படுகின்றன.
சொற்பிறப்பியல் ரீதியாக, அறிஞர்கள் இதை “சேர்” மற்றும் “ஆலம்” (பகுதி) உடன் இணைக்கின்றனர், அதாவது கடலால் சேர்க்கப்பட்ட நிலம் எனப் பெயர் காரணத்தைக் குறிப்பிடுகின்றனர். சில வரலாற்றாசிரியர்கள் மாநிலத்தின் முக்கிய விவசாய விளைபொருளான “கேரம்” (தேங்காய்) இருப்பதால் அதை வைத்து காரணப் பெயராக உருவானது எனக் கருதுகின்றனர். ஆகமொத்தத்தில் அது கேரளா அல்ல கேரளம் என்பதுதான் சரியானது என வாதிடுகின்றனர்.

மேற்கு வங்கம் – பங்களா
முன்னாள் முதல்வர் ஜோதி பாசு தலைமையிலான மேற்கு வங்கத்தின் இடது முன்னணி அரசாங்கம், 1999-ம் ஆண்டு மாநிலத்தின் பெயரை “பஷ்சிம் பங்களா” அல்லது “பங்களா” என்று மாற்றுவதற்கு முதலில் முன்மொழிந்தது என்று தகவல்கள் தெரிவிக்கின்றன.
2011-ல் மம்தா பானர்ஜி முதல்வரான பிறகு, மாநிலத்தின் மாற்றுவதற்கு மாநில அரசு முன்மொழிந்தது. அதையும் மத்திய அரசு நிராகரித்தது.
