The central government has ordered a ban on the manufacture, sale, and distribution of 16 medicines made in fixed-dose combinations (FDCs).
The Union Health Ministry said this ban has been imposed under Section 26A of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, because there is no medical justification for them, their continued use is not considered beneficial, and their possible side effects have been taken into account.
Fixed-dose combination medicines (FDCs) are combinations that contain two or more active pharmaceutical ingredients in a specific ratio.
In this regard, the press release issued by the Union Ministry of Health on Saturday said:
Based on the orders issued by the Supreme Court, an expert committee was constituted by the Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB) to examine FDC drugs and identify drug combinations that are medically irrational or potentially harmful.
Based on the recommendations of this expert committee, it was decided to immediately ban the manufacture, sale, and distribution of 16 FDC medicines nationwide. This ban was imposed because there was no medical justification, their continued use was not considered beneficial, and possible side effects were taken into account. These include a range of therapeutic categories such as dermatological medicines, pain relievers, muscle relaxants, and antimicrobial-related combinations.
Prohibited drug combinations: combinations containing acetylsalicylic acid with ethoheptazine; dicyclomine, paracetamol and clidinium bromide; dicyclomine, paracetamol, clidinium bromide and chlordiazepoxide; gliclazide with chromium picolinate; and combination medicines including paracetamol with lignocaine are prohibited.
Serratiopeptidase with amoxicillin; serratiopeptidase and Lactobacillus sporogenes with amoxicillin; cloxacillin with amoxicillin; lactic acid bacillus and serratiopeptidase; probenecid with cefadroxil; serratiopeptidase with cefuroxime; and several other antibiotic-based drug combinations have also been banned.
Skin cosmetics: In addition to medicines, many skin and skincare formulations containing aloe vera or aloe vera extract blends with ingredients including vitamin E, jojoba oil, orange oil, wheat germ oil, tea tree oil, allantoin, and D-panthenol are also prohibited.
All state drug controllers, regulatory authorities, and law enforcement agencies are instructed to ensure that this prohibition notice is strictly enforced.
The Union Health Ministry has stated that drug manufacturers, importers, and distributors are also advised to take the necessary corrective action in compliance with the law.
