Chennai: The death toll from the ammonia gas leak at a private seafood export factory near Uthukottai has risen to 7. Chief Minister Vijay, who has expressed deep condolences to those who died in the accident, has said that he has ordered that the necessary assistance be provided to those undergoing treatment.
Unexpectedly, an ammonia gas leak occurred today (21.06.2026) in the production unit of a private fish food export factory in Kannigaiper village near Periyapalayam, in Uthukottai taluk, Tiruvallur district. As a result, 64 people working there were affected. In this accident, 7 people lost their lives, and more than 50 others have been admitted to government and private hospitals. At the same time, the government has confirmed that two women have died.
In this situation, Chief Minister Vijay, in a statement issued regarding this accident, said, “I was deeply shocked and saddened to hear the tragic news that two women lost their lives in this incident. I extend my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of those who died in this accident, and I have ordered that two lakh rupees each be provided from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund. I have also ordered that arrangements be made at government expense to send their bodies to their home state and carry out the burial.”
Furthermore, I have ordered that special treatment be provided to those admitted to the hospital due to this accident. I have also ordered that appropriate compensation be provided under the Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) scheme / Workmen’s Compensation Act to the workers who died or were affected in the accident. In the future, in order to avoid such accidents, I have ordered that immediate team inspections be conducted of hazardous industries.
I have ordered an inspection of the accident site under the leadership of the Director of the Department of Industrial Safety and Health, the Additional Director of the Department of Public Health, and the Member-Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, and directed that the preliminary investigation report be submitted within 24 hours and the comprehensive investigation report within 3 days.
He said, “The Minister for Information Technology, the Member of the Legislative Assembly, the District Monitoring Officer / senior Indian Administrative Service officer, and the District Collector jointly inspected the site where the incident occurred and instructed that appropriate further action be taken and that the necessary assistance be provided to the affected family members.”

விபத்து குறித்து இயக்குநர் தொழிலகப் பாதுகாப்பு மற்றும் சுகாதார துறை, கூடுதல் இயக்குநர் பொது சுகாதார துறை மற்றும் தமிழ்நாடு மாசுக் கட்டுப்பாடு வாரிய உறுப்பினர்-செயலர் தலைமையில் ஆய்வு மேற்கொண்டு முதற்கட்ட விசாரணை அறிக்கையினை 24 மணி நேரத்திற்குள்ளாகவும், முழுமையான விசாரணை அறிக்கையினை 3 நாட்களுக்குள்ளாகவும் சமர்ப்பிக்குமாறு உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளேன்.
இச்சம்பவம் நடைபெற்ற இடத்திற்கு தகவல் தொழில்நுட்பத் துறை அமைச்சர், சட்டமன்ற உறுப்பினர், மாவட்ட கண்காணிப்பு அலுவலர் /மூத்த இந்திய ஆட்சிப்பணி அலுவலர், மாவட்ட ஆட்சியர் ஆகியோர் இணைந்து நேரடியாக ஆய்வு செய்து தக்க மேல்நடவடிக்கையும், பாதிக்கப்பட்ட குடும்பத்தினருக்கு தேவைப்படும் உதவியினை செய்யுமாறும் அறிவுறுத்தியுள்ளேன்” என தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.
