In Tamil Nadu, government, government-aided, and private schools functioning under the control of the School Education Department have been open since June 4, and teaching-learning activities have been underway. In this situation, it has come to light that some people are using the name of the School Education Department to defraud parents in the name of an assistance grant. Unknown individuals contacting parents whose children study from Class 6 to Plus 2 say that your child has been selected to receive a Rs. 50,000 grant. To receive it, you must pay Rs. 18,000 in advance. They say this amount will be refunded later. Following this, they send a ‘QR’ scan code to the parents’ WhatsApp number and ask them to make the payment through it. They also try to convince parents by sending fake ‘screenshots’ supposedly sent to some parents who had already received the grant. Believing this to be true, some parents send money to the respective numbers.
Then, within a day or two after the payment, mysterious individuals transferred the entire amount in their bank accounts to their own bank accounts. This fraud has taken place in cities across various districts, including Chennai, Coimbatore, and Tiruchirappalli.
Education department officials said regarding this: This problem has been ongoing since 2023. No one from the School Education Department contacts parents to provide financial assistance. The assistance is sent directly to students’ bank accounts by the respective welfare departments, such as the Backward Classes Welfare Department and the Social Welfare Department, and not through ‘Google Pay’ or ‘PhonePe’. Parents should not believe calls or text messages related to this. In the past, complaints have been filed with the police against those involved in such frauds, and action has been taken. Therefore, parents should remain vigilant and not be deceived by fraudsters, they said.
