In the Sathankulam father-son murder case, the Madurai Bench of the Chennai High Court on Monday adjourned to the 17th the hearing on a petition seeking to uphold the sentences imposed on nine people, including a police inspector.
Jeyaraj (58), a businessman from Sathankulam in Thoothukudi district, and his son Bennix (31), had kept their mobile phone shop open beyond the permitted hours during the coronavirus lockdown in 2020.
In this connection, the Sathankulam police took them to the police station for questioning and assaulted them. Both of them, who suffered severe injuries, died. In the related case, the then Inspector Sridhar, Assistant Inspectors Balakrishnan, Ragu Ganesh, Palthurai, and constables Murugan, Muthuraj, Samithurai, Selladurai, Veyilumuthu, and Thomas were arrested.
Among them, Assistant Inspector Palthurai died due to ill health. Following this, he was acquitted from the case, while the remaining 9 are still in prison. This case was transferred to a CBI investigation. The case was heard in the First District Court in Madurai. At the end of the trial, the court ordered the death penalty for all 9 police personnel.
A petition was filed on behalf of the CBI in the Madurai Bench of the Chennai High Court, seeking confirmation of this sentence. Judges Anand Venkatesh and K.K. Ramakrishnan, who had already heard this petition, adjourned the hearing after directing the lawyers to decide and respond on whether, in this case, the present bench should hear it or whether a future bench of judges should hear it.
In this situation, the petition came up for hearing again on Monday before the High Court judges Anand Venkatesh and K. K. Ramakrishnan.
At that time, it was reported that, apart from former police inspector Sridhar, the other accused had filed an appeal petition.
