Chennai: “The Tamil Nadu government should not grant permission for the new plan to set up 4 hydrocarbon wells in the sea off Cuddalore Parangipettai,” said Seeman, the chief coordinator of the Naam Tamilar Katchi.
In a statement issued by him on this, it is deeply shocking that the Hindustan Oil Company has planned to set up four more new hydrocarbon wells in the sea area near Parangipettai in Cuddalore district. At a time when people are struggling to ensure that environmentally destructive hydrocarbon projects are not permitted in Tamil Nadu under any circumstances, the Hindustan company’s application for 4 hydrocarbon projects is strongly condemnable.
Naam Tamilar Katchi has been continuously fighting that hydrocarbon projects, which pollute land and water and damage the environment, should not be permitted in any part of Tamil Nadu. It declared the Cauvery delta a protected agricultural zone and promised that it would not allow hydrocarbon projects or other environmentally destructive projects.
Following that, during the DMK regime, hydrocarbon projects that were to be launched in various parts of Tamil Nadu, including Periyakudi in Tiruvarur district, the coastal area of Ramanathapuram, and Parangipettai, were also stopped through intense protests.
At present, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation has once again applied to the Tamil Nadu Coastal Zone Management Authority (TNCZMA) seeking environmental clearance to set up 4 new hydrocarbon oil wells in the sea, at an estimated cost of Rs. 425 crore, about 18 km from Parangipettai in Cuddalore district.
The Parangipettai coastal area in Cuddalore district is not only a traditional fishing zone but also an area of environmental significance. The hydrocarbon project proposed in this area will pollute seawater, destroy marine biodiversity including fish, and pose a grave threat to the traditional fishing industry itself.
He has stated that he urges the TVK government not to grant approval for the hydrocarbon project, which destroys the livelihoods of fishermen, environmental protection, biodiversity, and marine resources for the benefit of private corporations.

கடலூர் மாவட்டம் பரங்கிப்பேட்டை கடற்பகுதி பாரம்பரிய மீன்பிடித் தொழில் பகுதி மட்டுமல்லாது சுற்றுச்சூழல் முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்த பகுதியாகும். இப்பகுதியில் தொடங்கப்படும் ஹைட்ரோ கார்பன் திட்டமானது கடல் நீரை மாசுபடுத்தி, மீன்கள் உள்ளிட்ட கடல்வாழ் பல்லுயிர் பெருக்கத்தை அழித்து, பாரம்பரிய மீன்பிடித் தொழிலுக்கே பேராபத்தை ஏற்படுத்தும்.
தனியார் பெருநிறுவனங்களின் நலனுக்காக மீனவர்களின் வாழ்வாதாரத்தையும், சுற்றுச்சூழல் பாதுகாப்பையும், பல்லுயிர் பெருக்கத்தையும், கடல் வளத்தையும் அழித்தொழிக்கும் ஹைட்ரோ கார்பன் திட்டத்திற்கு தவெக அரசு அனுமதியளிக்க வேண்டாமென வலியுறுத்துகிறேன் எனத் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.
