The CID conducted a second round of questioning on Sunday of MP Abhishek Banerjee in the case filed over allegations that a letter bearing forged signatures of MLAs was submitted to the Speaker in connection with the resolution on the election of the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.
TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh also appeared for this questioning, which took place at the CID headquarters in Kolkata. Earlier, on June 11, the CID had questioned Abhishek Banerjee for six hours in connection with the matter. A CID officer said the second round of questioning was carried out because the answers given by Abhishek Banerjee then were not satisfactory.
Furthermore, the officer said that the CBCID has also insisted that he submit documents related to this case, including where the signatures of the MLAs were obtained.
After winning only 80 seats in the West Bengal Assembly election and losing to the BJP, strong dissatisfaction arose within the Trinamool Congress against the party’s leader Mamata Banerjee. In this situation, a meeting of Trinamool Congress MLAs was held on May 6 to choose the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly.
Abhishek Banerjee had sent a letter to the Speaker stating that 70 MLAs had signed the resolution supporting the appointment of Mamata Banerjee’s nominee, Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, as the Leader of the Opposition.
However, Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha, who were suspended from the Trinamool Congress, alleged that no resolution regarding the selection of the Leader of the Opposition was passed at the meeting on the 6th, and that many of the 70 signatures on the form said to be the resolution were forged.
Based on the complaint filed by the Secretary of the Legislative Assembly in this regard, the Kolkata Police registered a case and investigated it. The CBCID is currently conducting the investigation related to this.
