Disgruntled MPs of the Trinamool Congress announced on Sunday that they would join the National Citizens Party.
The BJP won the West Bengal Assembly election and brought an end to the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress. Following this, a split emerged in the Trinamool Congress. Of the party’s 80 MLAs, 58 disgruntled MLAs broke away as a separate faction, while among the party’s 28 Lok Sabha MPs, 20 disgruntled MPs split off separately.
Meeting with Om Birla: Dissident MPs met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in person in New Delhi on Sunday. Regarding this, one of the dissident MPs, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, told reporters:
Two-thirds of the Trinamool Congress MPs submitted a letter to Om Birla requesting that they be recognized as a separate group. Another disgruntled MP, Sudeep Bandyopadhyay, said, “The disgruntled MPs have already joined the Nationalist Citizens Party. It is a state party. The court will decide who the real Trinamool Congress party members are. We will claim the Trinamool Congress election symbol, the two flowers,” he said.
A party from Tripura...: The little-known Nationalist Citizens Party from Tripura is a registered but unrecognized party. Sudeep Bandyopadhyay said that the disgruntled MPs have joined that party.
Disgruntled MPs increase to 22: Earlier, at Kolkata airport, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar told reporters: “At present, there are 22 disgruntled MPs in the Trinamool Congress party. Those who have honestly raised their voice about the situation prevailing in West Bengal over the past 4 to 5 years are with us,” she said.
It was reported that there were 19 disgruntled MPs in the Trinamool Congress. One of those MPs, Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia, had already said that they would meet Om Birla, seeking recognition as the real Trinamool Congress.
However, Kakoli Ghosh, who said last Monday that the party had 20 disgruntled MPs, has now said that there are 22 disgruntled MPs. However, she did not reveal who the two additional MPs are. Kakoli Ghosh said that details about them will be released after the two MPs formally join the disgruntled MPs.

The All India Trinamool Congress should be treated as a single political party. The party’s MPs in the House should be represented only through the Trinamool Congress’s recognized leader and whip. Before taking any decision on this matter, the Trinamool Congress party should be given an opportunity to present its side,’ he has requested.

Authority rests with the Election Commission: On this issue, constitutional expert P.T.T. Acharya told PTI that the authority to decide who the real Trinamool Congress members are lies solely with the Election Commission.
