Members of the Indian National Students’ Union (NSUI) marched on Thursday toward the headquarters of the Election Commission of India in the national capital to protest the functioning of the Election Commission, the student organization said.
Hundreds of members took part in the march, carrying placards to express concern over what it said was the declining independence and neutrality of the Election Commission, the organization said.
The protesters carried banners and placards. They raised slogans and demanded greater transparency and accountability from the Election Commission.
According to the NSUI, when the participants in the march tried to move toward the Election Commission office, the Delhi Police stopped them and arrested several protesters and leaders.
A senior police officer said the protesters were taken into preventive custody for holding a protest in an unauthorized place and to maintain law and order.
Speaking at this meeting, NSUI national president Vinod Jakhar alleged that the Election Commission’s recent actions and decisions have raised questions about its independence, transparency, and credibility.
He said that constitutional institutions must function without fear, without bias, and without political influence, and added that certain incidents, including the rejection of Congress leader Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination, have strengthened perceptions that there is political pressure on democratic institutions.
Furthermore, Jakar, who condemned the arrest of the protesters, said that peaceful democratic dissent should be allowed.
The student organization said that it would continue to raise issues related to the functioning of democratic institutions and the protection of constitutional values.
