The International Chess Federation, FIDE, has ordered Russia to be banned from participating in chess tournaments for 3 years.
While the war between Ukraine and Russia is ongoing, Russia had been organizing chess tournaments in the occupied regions of Ukraine.
Russia has occupied Ukraine’s regions of Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson. It became controversial that Russia continued to hold major chess competitions in those areas.
In 2023, the Ukrainian Chess Federation complained that Russia was violating FIDE rules by gathering regional countries in the occupied territories and conducting chess tournaments.
In this situation, the Court of Arbitration for Sport had ordered Russia last March to stop all chess tournaments planned to be held in the occupied regions of Ukraine and had given it a 90-day deadline. Since the deadline ended on June 9 and Russia violated that order, the Russian Chess Federation has been banned from participating in chess events for three years.
Accordingly, Russia will not be able to take part in any chess events organized by FIDE worldwide. However, Russian players may participate individually in tournaments without representing Russia.
FIDE initially ordered a two-year ban, but on appeal the penalty was reduced to a fine of 45,000 euros. However, after the order was found to undermine Ukraine’s territorial integrity, the fine was revoked and a three-year ban was ordered.
Arkady Dvorkovich, Russia’s former deputy prime minister, was the head of FIDE. He was removed from the post in May after Ukraine accused him of maintaining personal and professional ties with people sanctioned in Western countries.

ஆக்கிரமிப்பு பகுதிகளில் பிராந்திய நாடுகளை திரட்டி செஸ் தொடர் நடத்தி, ஃபிடே விதிகளை ரஷியா மீறுவதாக 2023-ல் உக்ரைன் செஸ் கூட்டமைப்பு புகார் தெரிவித்திருந்தது.
