The protest of sanitation workers in Chennai, who have been fighting for over 150 days against privatization and for job security, is expected to come to an end today. On behalf of the government, Minister Sekar Babu is scheduled to end the sanitation workers' hunger strike today and discuss their demands. The sanitation workers' protest began after the Chennai Corporation decided to outsource garbage collection work in zones 5 and 6 to private contractors. In opposition, more than 1,900 sanitation workers started protesting from August 1. Their protest began in front of Ripon Building and continued in various areas.
