In the last legislative assembly election, the Congress contested in 25 constituencies as part of the DMK-led alliance and won in 18 seats. After the passing of E.V.K.S. Elangovan, who won in Erode East, that constituency has come under DMK control. As a result, Congress currently has only 17 MLAs. In this context, ahead of the assembly elections scheduled for next year, Congress leaders have been demanding to contest in 40 to 70 constituencies and to be given an official share of power in the government.
