The Election Commission undertook the task of verifying and revising the voter list throughout Tamil Nadu through the S.I.R. process. When controversy arose in Bihar over the removal of voters' names, opposition emerged in Tamil Nadu as well. Additionally, the short time frame given led to further disputes. In this context, in Thanjavur, government officials including revenue department staff and volunteers, under the leadership of the District Collector in each district, engaged in the S.I.R. work. Meanwhile, the draft voter list prepared according to the S.I.R. was released by District Collector Priyanka Pankajam at the Thanjavur District Collector's office.
Before the S.I.R., there were 2,098,561 voters in the eight assembly constituencies of Thanjavur district. After the S.I.R., 1,892,058 voters were included in the electoral roll. 206,503 voters were removed. It is said that this includes deceased individuals and those who have migrated to other areas. We spoke to some members of political parties about this, and they said, "Initially, the process of receiving and uploading S.I.R. applications in Thanjavur district was sluggish. Later, the district collector, D.R.O., and other officials paid full attention and worked day and night on the task. As a result, the process of receiving and uploading S.I.R. applications accelerated."
It is said that applications without documents like Aadhaar have also been uploaded. In this situation, 206,503 voters have been removed from the draft voter list released by the District Collector. If a qualified voter's name has been omitted for some reason or has been removed, the Election Commission should take action to include that voter so they can exercise their voting rights. If a voter loses their vote, it will be considered a failure on the part of the Election Commission," they said.
