SPB Gopinath, the Kanchi district secretary of the Makkal Needhi Maiam party and the in-charge of the state entrepreneurs’ wing, has resigned from his posts as well as his party membership.
He, who has been with the party since 2019, said with emotion that he was driven to this decision only after immense mental distress.
Speaking to reporters today on this matter, he said, ``I sent my resignation letter to the party’s headquarters early this morning itself. The party’s current sluggish functioning is mainly due to its general secretary.
The general secretary, who had earlier left the party and tried to invite many people to the BJP, has re-entered the party and brought all activity to a standstill.
Founded in 2018, this party received 4% of the votes in its first election. In the 2021 Assembly election, I contested in the Two-tier urban area and received more than 12,000 votes. Many people joined it because of their admiration for Kamal Haasan.
Boycotting the recently concluded election came as a huge shock to us and amounted to a massacre of democracy. No one knew about the decision to boycott the election until 6 p.m. that day.
The decision was announced only after going to Arivalayam. The party’s decisions are being made solely for the self-interest of a few individuals. Dedicated workers are not given proper respect in the party.
All the efforts we made to bring the party’s decline to the attention of leader Kamal Haasan were blocked by the general secretary. Even complaints sent to the official email do not reach the leader’s view.
No consultative meetings are held regarding post-election defeats. Although Kamal Haasan’s actions are not directly wrong, he has been kept at a distance that makes him difficult for the grassroots workers to approach.
People's Justice Party, which was started as an alternative to the DMK and AIADMK, forming an alliance with the DMK turned out to be a deeply bitter event for us. Apart from poet Snehan, no one in the party has political maturity. The current office-bearers, including the deputy leaders, do not know politics.
Following my decision, many more key office-bearers in the party are in severe mental distress. Within the next few days, 3 to 4 important office-bearers who have a good reputation in the society are going to leave the party.
Even if I leave the Makkal Needhi Maiam, my social work and political work will continue without any interruption. However, I have not yet made a final decision on which party to join next," he said.
