“There is the power to carry the body to death. But there is no power in that death to carry the memories about a person. That is why the memories of Kalaignar are still with us today,” begins Kamatham P. Selvendran, Secretary of the DMK Election Campaign Committee, speaking beautifully. 1971-ல் நான் கல்லூரி மாணவனாக இருந்தபோது நேரடி அரசியலில் ஈடுபடத் தொடங்கினேன். அப்போது நடைபெற்ற சட்டப்பேரவை தேர்தலில் திமுகவுக்கு ஆதரவாக பிரச்சாரம் செய்தேன். அப்போதெல்லாம் தேர்தல் வரைதான் கட்சிகளுக்குள் ஒருவருக்கு ஒருவர் போட்டி மனநிலை இருக்கும். அதன் பிறகு அனைத்தையும் மறந்து ஒன்றுக்குள் ஒன்றாகி விடுவோம். பிரச்சாரத்துக்குச் செல்லும் ஊர்களில் தங்கும் விடுதி வசதி எல்லாம் அப்போது குறைவு. பெரும்பாலும் கட்சிக்காரர்களின் வீடுகளில் தான் தங்கவேண்டும். பல நேரங்களில் அதுகூட கிடைக்காமல் வீட்டுத் திண்ணைகளில் தூங்கி எழுந்த அனுபவமும் நிறையவே இருக்கிறது.
